Rough Sleeping and Begging in Darlington There are individuals who beg and individuals who rough-sleep on the streets of Darlington, but it is rare to find a beggar who rough-sleeps or a rough-sleeper who begs. The two problems are distinct, and the individuals involved present with very different needs. The 700 Club works on the street with both those who beg and those who rough-sleep with the aim of meeting the individual's needs. Problems like an addiction to drugs or alcohol, or a severe mental health problem, often explain why homelessness or the need to beg have arisen. Alongside directly meeting the needs of those who beg, we encourage members of the public to think before giving out money; a simple act of generosity can be very destructive if the money is used to buy drugs or alcohol. Additionally, the promise of easy money can, during the winter, cause people to stay out on the street in sub-zero temperatures, putting their health at risk.
